A Better Tomorrow and A Better Tomorrow 2

A Better Tomorrow

After checking out The Killer, I started working on the A Better Tomorrow trilogy. I still haven’t gotten around to seeing the third, but that film was not directed by John Woo so for now I’ll stick to the first two movies. When I see the third, non-Woo flick, I’ll get back to you guys then.

A Better Tomorrow tells the story of gangsters in a money counterfeiting business. Throw in guns, some good old criminal betrayal, and a gangster-police family connection and you have A Better Tomorrow.

As always, the action sequences are top notch. Expect high body counts and bullets flying everywhere. A Better Tomorrow 2 has a fantastic shotgun sequence and also includes some swordplay in the final battle. However, I would say that A Better Tomorrow works better than its sequel as an action movie in the end. Some of the plot (who needs it!) lines are really tiresome in the second flick, and the first movie works better as a whole.

The A Better Tomorrow series exemplifies serious John Woo action. While the sequel failed to maintain my interest plot-wise, it had some great action sequences in it - i.e. Chow Yun Fat diving through hallways with a shotgun. Again, if you’re interested in early Woo, A Better Tomorrow is a staple for your HK action appetite.

Both movies: 3 midair shotgun shells out of 5
