Transformers

Holy smokes! Robots in disguise! Transformers is the ridiculous high-octane action blockbuster that works well during the summer months. Check your brain at the door, because this one’s got shiny lights and a lot of noise.

Transformers is a Michael Bay flick, and as already well known, Bay is synonymous with “blow lotsa shit up.” The movie is pretty much non-stop action, and it has top of the notch special effects one would expect from a movie this big. Transformers has a lot of eye candy, and when you see the robots transform, it really is quite fun. Personally, I was a big fan of the scorpion robot that is featured in the trailer. It really had a great look diving through the sand, and its attack upon the military was reminiscent of a monster movie.

In addition to strong action, Transformers had some truly funny moments - mostly due to Shia LaBeouf’s performance. I can see why people think he’s the next big thing since his acting made the movie that much more enjoyable. Megan Fox clearly was not hired for her acting skills, and other characters are just decent, spouting ridiculous dialogue that should only be used in a summer blockbuster derived from Hasbro toys.

Perhaps Transformers weakest point is its length-around two and a half hours. The silly dialogue was expected, and the great action made up for this folly, but when the movie passed the two hour mark, I started to get tired of seeing explosions and hearing not-so-witty lines. Transformers overstayed its welcome with me, and I wanted to leave right about when Megatron awoke from his frozen cage…

Transformers is a bunch of fun, but with the price of stretching your bladder. Yes, the dialogue is bad, but then again, the explosions are aplenty to keep your attention elsewhere (you could always ogle Megan Fox too). All in all, robots fighting robots is great fun; just make sure you pass on the soda this time.

The bladder holding happened for me at Die Hard 4. Too much pop no bathroom break = an uncomfortable last 15 minutes.

And I’m particularly happy to see all the love for Shia. That kid’s going places.

At first I was skeptical of all the Shia praise, but after seeing Transformers I think he’s doing a pretty good job. Hopefully his role in Indiana Jones 4 will work well also.
