Superbad (imdb)

Superbad

Who’s on the Judd Apatow bandwagon? I sure am; his influence has created a new wave of dialogue driven comedy, making us laugh at penis jokes in a whole new way. Although he didn’t direct Superbad, the Apatow name is clearly associated with this high school comedy as one of the writers was Seth Rogen of Apatow’s fantastic Knocked Up.

Superbad follows the story of best friends Evan and Seth, seniors in high school who are cruising through the last few weeks before graduation. The story follows their adventures in acquiring alcohol for a party and their respective plans to hook up with chicks.

Superbad is a hilarious movie. If the whole movie was just watching Seth and Evan talk to one another, it would probably be well worth a viewing. Throwing in characters like Fogel and the police officers add a lot of fun to the bunch, and the movie never tires or runs out of steam. The criticisms against the police officers (Seth Rogen overstays his welcome a bit) are not completely out of line, but the two generate so many laughs that I’m not complaining.

In the end, Superbad is definitely worth watching. Is it funnier than Apatow’s Knocked Up? Maybe so - it’s tough to tell right now. I think Knocked Up is generally a better comedy, but Superbad hits its notes with confidence. See Superbad now - don’t watch the trailers or clips because then you’ll know some of the jokes!
