It seems that Apple has been hard at work courting Hollywood producers in hopes of expanding its movie and TV show store on iTunes. Thus far, they’ve only really been successful targeting shorts like the “Hotel Chevalier” short which was meant to accompany “The Darjeeling Limited” (read our review). But, Apple made its biggest splash yesterday with the first-run release of “Purple Violets.” It marks the first full-length feature to be making its exclusive debut on iTunes. Could more first-run releases be on the way? Is iTunes the movie theater of the future?

The trailer above is for “Purple Violets,” a movie by Edward Burns who’s most famous for having directed “The Brothers McMullen.” To be honest, I don’t know much about it, but the review at Cinematical is quite promising. Don’t know much about the movie itself, other than that it premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year and went on to win Best Feature at the Savannah Film and Video Festival earlier this month. Not one of the big name festivals, but must mean that some people like it! From the looks of the trailer, it definitely has that quirky, indie film flavor. And, it’s got two pretty fine actresses if you ask me - Selma Blair and Debra Messing.

The movie is selling for $14.99 on iTunes which is more than a standard movie ticket, but you do get to keep it. I would hope that prices come down after it loses “first run” status. Maybe I’ll chance a download.
