High School Musical 2 (imdb | dvd)

The second submission to the most successful cable TV movie of all time is coming out on DVD in 1 week (December 11, 2007)! You can already pre-order on Amazon and they guarantee delivery by Christmas. If you ask me, it’s the perfect holiday gift for anyone that’s nostalgic for high school, in high school, or just looking for a cute musical. Okay, maybe I’m only speaking for myself.
“High School Musical 2″ follows after the school year depicted in “High School Musical.” Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) are excited for their summer break and have landed jobs at a nearby country club. As luck would have it, Troy manages to get all his best friends hired at the club and it just so happens that high school prima donna, Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale), and her uber-rich parents are highly influential members at the club. And, what’s a high school movie without some angst and cliche? Where the original “High School Musical” dealt with stereotypes, cliques, and trying to be yourself, the sequel goes back to the well and chooses the traditional “popularity isn’t everything” story. Here we watch Troy Bolton deal with the stress of finding a college and dealing with being the most popular guy around. But, popularity and success aren’t everything. You can’t forget your best friends. With the inevitability of college looming, the High School Musical kids realize that they only have now to have the best summer of their lives.
Alright, it’s a Disney Channel movie. It’s formulaic. The storyline is ridiculous. And, the acting is either atrocious or wonderfully satirical (depending on your perspective). That being said, it’s fun to watch and the music and dance numbers are really entertaining. If you ask me, they might be more fun than in the original. (And, why, this Christmas, I’m also hoping to get High School Musical: Sing It for the Wii)
A dumbed down Grease with a little bit of Breakfast Club angst. It’s cute, simple, and fun. And, sometimes that’s all you really want. Plus, the kids will go ga-ga over this. And, if you have any semblance of an inner child left, so should you.
2.5 summer breaks out of 5 (but a 5 out of 5 as a guilty pleasure)
