So it appears unplanned pregnancies make for good cinema, more specifically dramedies. Earlier this year, Knocked Up (more comedy than dramedy I guess) scored big and now we have the lovable Juno. Yes, it’s a winner too.
Ellen Page plays the title character, a 16-year old with a belly-full of problems that are “past her maturity level.” Juno has some fun with her good friend Paulie Bleeker, played by the always awkward Michael Cera, and soon the plus sign on the pregnancy test appears. Of course, a perfect couple seeking to adopt simplifies matters when Juno jumps ship from the abortion-route. Obstacles pop up, and emotions run high before matters straighten out in the end.
Juno is a simple film that is both funny and touching, commanded by its strong cast. Ellen Page does wonders with Juno, spitting out lines naturally and with comic precision. Michael Cera is, well, Michael Cera, and J.K. Simmons and Allison Janney are amazing as Juno’s parentals (I only wish the film had more of those two). Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman are also acceptable as the couple in the market for a new born.
The pleasures of Juno come mostly from its quip dialogue, that which comes mostly from Ellen Page. Her attitude and slight smarm make watching her interact with adults and friends a fun experience. My only concern was that I found the dialogue to be a little too on point at times with moments where I was thinking, “who actually speaks that suavely?”
All in all, Juno is a sweet film. Part comedy, part drama, part love story, the film does no harm and in fact does a lot of good storytelling. Juno comes highly recommended and while I don’t really see it winning awards or playing Oscar bait, it may depending upon the quality of the other contenders this year. Definitely worth a gander and your buck, go check it out!

I was VERY impressed with Ellen in Hard Candy, and I’m really looking forward to this movie. I wasn’t a big Arrested Development fan, but I absolutely loved Michael Cera in Superbad. It warms my heart to see good reviews like this.
