Cloverfield (imdb | get the dvd)

So by now, everyone knows Cloverfield as the Blair Witch-zilla movie. And I would say that’s an entirely accurate description; with cheap thrills and a Disney movie length runtime, the film resembles the low budget Blair Witch on more than a few levels. However, the use of the shaky camera works pretty well in this disaster flick and despite more than a few flaws, Cloverfield entertains.
The film follows a group of yuppie New Yorkers who are unfortunate to get caught up in a monster attack on the city during a going away party. Our hero, Rob, is in love with Beth despite the fact they are currently not together. After having a tiff during the party, Beth storms out and soon after the monster attack begins. Amidst the crisis, Rob feels the need to find and rescue Beth, going against all odds to get to her.
The main problem of the movie comes from the ridiculous nonsensical mission of rescuing Beth. Every one of Rob’s buds apparently has to tag along, risking their lives for Rob’s bleeding heart. Additionally, as certain characters met their demise, the entourage’s reactions were a bit off. Are they not put off by death at all? In the flick, they spare a few tears and quickly move on. Finally, the geography of the subway walk is a bit questionable. Walking up the 6 does not take you to Columbus Circle, I’m sorry.
It’s pretty easy to look past these flaws though and just enjoy the ride. Cloverfield sports some pretty standard thrills and some all-to-perfectly shot handheld work to make the film engaging and interesting. Does it live up to its hype? Kind of. Is it worth seeing? Kind of. Will you have fun? I did.
