Definitely, Maybe (imdb)

Definitely Maybe

When was the last time you saw a chick flick and thought of it highly? If you’re like me, a manly man, then the answer is never. Chick flick’s are formulaic “make girls feel happy” movies made with cookie-cutter, emotionally manipulative plots that lead to grand, happily-ever-after resolutions. And then came Definitely, Maybe. A chick flick with an honest heart, a movie with its own character, and Van Wilder.

Ryan Reynold’s stars as Will Hayes, a separated father soon to enter the single life as he receives divorce papers. Abigail “Miss Sunshine” Breslin plays his daughter who questions his past love life which has lead to said divorce. The film then progresses in a flashback “How I Met Your Mother” style, where Will Hayes explains to his daughter - in a PG version - his hook-ups, his girlfriends, and his hardships in finding love.

The film is definitely a well made chick flick.  Instead of having an unfortunate series of events that lead to sugar-coated love between Matthew and Kate, Definitely, Maybe blends realism with a love story that is low in cynicism and high in heart.  The movie’s positivity jumps off the screen and you’ll exit the theater feeling satisfied.

Going into the theater, I didn’t expect to find such an interesting and involving film, but rather a run of the mill How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days ordeal.  While I watched the film, I was pleasantly surprised to see such a solid chick flick.  Who knew chick flicks could escape the Hollywood machine and become interesting movies?  Find your handsome knight or lovely damsel, and take a trip to the cineplex to see this movie.
