Iron Man (imdb)

Jump starting the summer season with strong film comes our first hero movie, Iron Man. Directed by the “so money” Jon Favreau and supported by a superhero strong cast, the movie flies high and hits as hard the title character.

Genius, playboy Tony Stark aka Iron Man is played by Robert Downey Jr. who propels the movie with his awesomeness. Downey Jr. is at first the “merchant of death,” selling weapons for profit without a care on his mind. But after a close encounter with some of the users of Stark Industries technology, Stark finds his calling and decides to put an end to weapons development and defeat evildoers by becoming Iron Man. So I guess, in an attempt to stop his weapons from being bought and sold, he decides to create a armored suit filled with weapons… Sure it’s a bit contradictory and ironic (hehehe), but the movie is fully aware and acknowledges this fact with grace.

The film has some great CGI effects and explosions to fulfill any action lover’s dream. Seeing the Iron Man suit developed does take up a significant portion of the film, but it’s a pleasure nevertheless as Downey Jr. never lets anything get boring.

The acting is top notch for a comic book film. Robert Downey Jr. oozes with charisma and his screen time is never wasted. Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges are fine support as Pepper Potts and the bald dude Obadiah Stane, respectively. The film also has a good humor blending many funny situations into the narrative.

All in all, Iron Man is a definite enjoyable experience. The film is well-made entertainment and thankfully sets up another strong comic book movie franchise. While I still reside on my opinion that Batman Begins is the best comic book movie ever, Iron Man wins a place in my heart and hopefully there’ll be a lot more to come; 2010 is the word on the street.
